Serge Ferrari, creator and manufacturer of flexible composite materials, participated in the construction of the retractable roof of the central court at Roland-Garros, which hosts each year one of the four major tennis tournaments as part of the Grand Slam.
The retractable roof, made of steel, is covered with a translucent and waterproof fabric.
The roof consists of eleven steel beams, designed and manufactured by the Italian firm Cimolai, covered with 15,000 m² of flexible composite membranes coming from the Ferrari company. Thus, it will cover a total surface area of 1 hectare, and can be deployed in less than 15 minutes.
The French Tennis Federation wanted a system able to cover the stadium in a few minutes, to let in natural light, but also to provide the acoustic performance of an enclosed roof. Thanks to an Alphalia Silent AW fabric, the acoustic performance will also be improved during matches and in case of rain. Ferrari is not just in test phase! The company has already covered the London Olympic stadium.
