A united drive to enhance the value of industrial textile waste

17 . 12 . 2024

Holders of industrial waste, upgraders and public organisations met on November 27 in the “Métropole de Lyon” (Lyon metropolitan area), to tackle a common goal: to move forward together and organise the value chain for industrial textile waste.

In a context of strong economic and ecological constraints, costly and complex to characterise, textile waste constitutes a strategic issue for the sector. Among the solutions to be explored, there is recovery, which aims to transform waste into resources via reuse or recycling. This seems to be a practical and workable possibility.

To make the most of the opportunities offered by our own textile waste, we need to know how to characterise it; as well as identify the appropriate recovery systems and the organisations capable of upgrading it.

Organised by Techtera, in partnership with Lyon Pacte PME and with the support of the Métropole de Lyon, the day was marked by a full session dedicated to the challenges and perspectives for upgrading these industrial deposits. There were examples of upgrading concerning reuse and recycling. Also, there were very concrete results coming from partnerships between academics, industrialists and research projects. The business meeting session generated more than 200 contacts among the 120 participants.

This event was also an opportunity for our innovation cluster to publish a practical guide to upgrading systems for industrial textile deposits. After mapping the textile deposits in the region, with the support of the région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes this document provides a summary of the field survey carried out among French textile upgraders.

A big thank you to all the participants for their commitment. Together, we are laying the foundations for a sustainable transformation of the textile industry, where all those involved have a key role to play.

Let us continue to move forward together, and build a more responsible and resilient industry!
