PFAS, (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), are chemicals used for their water-repellent properties. They are persistent substances that pose a concern for the environment and health. In response to regulatory changes, IFTH, as an industrial technical centre, supports the textile industry in adapting to the new requirements.
On February 20, 2024, the National Assembly passed a law banning certain uses of PFAS as from 2026, especially for clothing textiles, footwear, and waterproofing products intended for consumers. Protective textiles and footwear for security and national defence, also certain technical textiles, are exempt. This law will be extended in 2030 to all textiles except for products deemed essential or technical (list to be specified by decree).
IFTH supports manufacturers by ensuring regulatory oversight of the legislative context and the circular economy. It also mobilises the sector through research projects such as DEPERFLEX II, certified by Techtera, AFTER, and BIO-SUSHY – Techtera is a partner. They explore alternatives to coatings containing PFAS. Finally, companies are supported in their effort to promote the best practices through the internationally recognised OEKO-TEX® labels.
By combining Monitoring, Innovation and Support for manufacturers, IFTH is contributing to a successful transition to more responsible textile solutions.
