Overview of Post-Industrial Textiles: Resources / Upgrading Processes

21 . 01 . 2026

Following two years of mapping post-industrial textile waste, conducted by Techtera in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, an overview of these resources and associated upgrading processes has been published with the support of the Lyon Metropolitan Area.

This white paper provides a synthesis of identified post-industrial resources, based on a survey conducted since 2023 with 68 companies. It presents precise information for quantifying and qualifying dormant stocks and production scraps; in terms of volume, composition and format.

The document also provides an overview of textile recovery processes in France, highlighting the challenges and future capabilities of the main processes: reuse, mechanical recycling, thermomechanical recycling and chemical recycling.

Most of these processes are currently under development, with promising innovations likely to rapidly transform their business models, value chains, and specialisations toward specific compositions.

A schematic representation of this emerging specialisation has been included in the study to facilitate the identification of the most suitable recovery processes; based on format or composition of the resources.
