Techtera: partner of the European SOLSTICE project towards a circular and carbon neutral economy for the European textile sector

23 . 07 . 2024

The SOLSTICE project, coordinated by Axel’One and lasting 42 months, was launched on May 1, 2024. Its main objective is to demonstrate four replicable systemic solutions for the national development of a circular and carbon-neutral economy for the major textile sectors.

Project objectives

The project will incorporate all stages of waste prevention and management following the 5R methodology: Refuse / Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose, Recycle.

The project will test its concepts in 4 regions across 4 European countries (France, Spain, Italy, Germany) with complementary characteristics (ranging from small towns to regions).

It will address new automated sorting solutions, as well as the chemical recycling of 4 major types of sector polymers: polyester, polyamide, elastane, and polyurethane.

A traceability system based on the “digital product passport” will also be developed to track materials and prove their origin.

The consortium brings together 24 public and private European entities covering the entire textile and plastic value chain, combining scientific and industrial expertise. Among the Techtera members involved are Axel’One, DITF, IFTH, LIP, Pellenc ST, Recyc’Elit, and the University of Lyon. The full list of partners is available available here.

The SOLSTICE project will:

  • Organize a new mode of governance to deploy the circular economy through the engagement of all stakeholders, including territories and local businesses, local authorities at all levels, and citizens,
  • Engage all stakeholders to ensure awareness, acceptance, and success of the initiative,
  • Develop new solutions to implement the 5R strategy in the regions,
  • For recycling, demonstrate innovative chemical recycling technologies for 4 major polymer families that represent more than 60% of textiles and plastics (polyester, elastane, polyamide, polyurethane), under mild conditions (low temperature, low pressure)
  • Implement actions for the replicability of the approach to have a maximal impact.

SOLSTICE is a Horizon Europe project, funded by the European Union.

Techtera’s role

As part of SOLSTICE, Techtera is responsible for developing a digital tool to assess the minimum viable sales prices at each stage of the 5R value chain, ensuring their overall economic viability. This tool will be tested in the four regions studied within the project. Techtera is also responsible for replicating these hubs by identifying and mapping territories of interest and managing the stakeholder advisory committee to ensure their information and engagement.
