Techtera has joined e-FLOWER, a new European project funded by Horizon Europe, which aims to accelerate the development of a new generation of flexible, robust, and sustainable smart textiles. Coordinated by the Tyndall National Institute (a deep tech research centre in Ireland), the consortium brings together 12 partners from 8 countries for a period of 48 months.
The project aims to overcome several obstacles to the development and adoption of smart textiles. These include: a lack of comfort; the fragility of components in the face of deformation and washing; the difficulties of integrating electronic components into textile structures; and, the environmental challenges associated with their manufacture and end-of-life. Repairability, reuse, and recycling are also key areas of focus.
To address this, e-FLOWER will develop: new bio-based materials; resource-efficient manufacturing processes; and, flexible, conformable electronic components such as sensors, antennas, energy harvesters, and storage modules. Circularity will be central to the approach, thanks to modular architectures that facilitate disassembly, repair, reuse, and material recovery.
The technologies developed will be tested in three utilisation cases: Earth (running, cycling, walking); Water (swimming, diving); Space (physical activities and well-being of astronauts).
As part of the project, Techtera facilitates the External Advisory Board and acts as a liaison with the appropriate industrial and research organisations. Its role is to foster dialogue with organisations and contribute to the ownership and dissemination of the project’s results.
