The ASTER project aims to develop solutions to improve the prevention and management of polymer waste in the Alps. In particular, it will focus on products specific to mountain areas made of textiles and/or plastics, and the harmonisation of economic policies in the Alpine region.
For three years, ASTER will work to provide the textile, plastics and mountain industries with solutions for adopting the “5R” strategies to improve the prevention (refuse, reduce) and management (reuse, reassign, recycle) of polymer waste in the Alps. The partners have chosen to target products used in mountain areas, which are highly dependent on these materials, and which are conducive to the development of circular value chains in the Alpine region.
ASTER follows a “study-test-transfer” logic for implementation
- The first phase: The project: aims to deepen the understanding of the geographical, legal, technical and political aspects related to the prevention and management of textile and plastic waste in the Alpine region.
- The second phase: Products adapted to the special features of mountain regions will be prototyped and tested and their economic models proven. This is in order to evaluate the various procedures arising from the “5R” strategies.
- Finally: The partners will stimulate real action procedures to propose solutions to industry and public authorities; and establish more sustainable and resource-efficient value chains
Techtera will be particularly involved in this last phase. The project mainly targets the three textile, plastic and mountain industries, as well as public authorities.
This project is directly linked to the “circular economy / resource economy” component of Techtera’s roadmap. It is in line with other projects of the cluster such as SOLSTICE and AlpTextyles.
ASTER was officially launched on October 9, 2024. The eleven project partners represent five countries in the Alpine region. The project has a budget of €2.6 million and will finish at the end of August 2027.
ASTER is co-financed by the European Commission under the Interreg Alpine Space programme. It is coordinated by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region and has two other regional partners.
