The used-textile collection and recycling sector in France is a crucial issue. In fact, more than 80% of what is collected goes to third countries, where a large part finishes as waste in landfill or buried.
Based on this observation concerning the end-of-life of textiles in France, SEMIN, via its subsidiary BUITEX Industries (dedicated to the recycling of textile fibres and the manufacture of insulation), is joining forces with TREMPLIN (a sorting firm), to offer a sustainable alternative. They have created a joint “Social and Solidarity Economy” venture, called IMPACT. These two complementary groups, working in the textile value chain, are joining forces to create a shared sorting centre in the Greater Lyon metropolitan area, to recycle textiles in France into eco-sourced insulation.
TREMPLIN, (working in the Social and Solidarity Economy sector), manages a sorting centre that locally processes 100% of the textiles collected via the Textile 360 project. This is an innovative approach supported by ADEME (environment and energy agency).
SEMIN, (manufacturer of construction materials), uses recycled textile fibres in its eco-sourced insulation, made from recycled cotton.
The new sorting centre located in the Greater Lyon metropolitan area will support SEMIN’s rise in the eco-responsible insulation market, while allowing TREMPLIN to reorganise and optimise its operations. Apart from its environmental impact, this partnership focuses on supporting people in difficulty to return to work.
The initiative, supported by ADEME for the sum of €85,873, is part of a broader vision aimed at promoting responsible housing. SEMIN and TREMPLIN executives emphasise the importance of this collaboration to reduce the export of textile waste, develop sustainable local production and raise public awareness about recycling.
