Project description
Objectives of ASTER
ASTER aims to develop solutions to improve the prevention and management of polymer waste in the Alps. The project will focus in particular on the harmonisation of economic policies in the Alpine region, and on products used in the mountains made of textiles and/or plastics: clothing, individual accessories and collective equipment.
Implementation of ASTER
For 3 years, ASTER will seek to provide the textiles, plastics and mountain industries with solutions for implementing 5R strategies to improve the prevention (refuse, reduce) and management (reuse, repurpose, recycle) of polymer waste in the Alps. The partners have chosen to focus on products used in mountain areas, which are heavily dependent on these materials, and which are likely to encourage circular value chains in the Alpine region.
ASTER follows a study-test-transfer implementation logic.
- The first phase of the project will develop knowledge on understanding the geographical, legal, technical and political framework for the prevention and management of textile and plastic waste in the Alps
- Secondly, products specific to mountain regions and business models will be tested/prototyped, in order to evaluate and test different approaches based on the 5Rs
- Finally, the partners will activate concrete action levers to propose solutions to industry and public authorities, to establish more sustainable and resource-efficient value chains.
Techtera will, among other things, be in charge of this third phase. The main targets of the project are the three textile-plastic-mountain industries, and the public authorities.
The project began on 1 September 2024 and will run until 31 August 2027. It is based on a partnership of 11 partners led by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region. In addition to Techtera, 2 partners from the region’s clusters represent the other industries targeted by the project: Polymeris and Cluster Montagne.
ASTER is co-funded by the European Union, within the frame of the Interreg Alpine Space programme.
